Flight compensation in France: questions and answers
Use these answers to separate your rights before making a claim. The operating airline, itinerary and circumstances matter; a delay alone does not establish a right to the maximum amount.
Which flights does EU 261 cover?
Flights departing from the EU are generally covered regardless of the operating airline’s nationality. For a flight departing outside the EU and arriving inside it, the operating airline generally needs to be an EU carrier. Connecting flights and separate bookings require closer examination.
What are the standard compensation amounts?
The standard amounts are €250 for flights up to 1,500 km, €400 for intra-EU flights over 1,500 km and other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km, and €600 for other longer flights. Re-routing within the applicable time limits may permit a 50% reduction. These amounts are separate from the ticket price.
Does a three-hour delay always qualify?
A delay of at least three hours at the final destination is the usual threshold for fixed delay compensation. The flight must be covered, and extraordinary circumstances may exclude compensation when the airline establishes the required conditions. Keep evidence of the actual arrival time and the stated cause.
What should I do after a cancellation?
Ask the airline about re-routing or a refund, and about care during the wait. Compensation is a separate question: advance notice and the timings of an offered alternative can affect entitlement. Keep the cancellation message and replacement itinerary.
How do I escalate a claim in France?
Write to the airline first. If it refuses or does not reply, check the competent mediator’s conditions. Prior mediation is generally required before French court proceedings concerning these disputes, subject to exceptions. A DGAC report serves enforcement and does not itself resolve an individual payment claim.
Is a claims company compulsory?
No. You can submit your own claim. A commercial service such as AirHelp is optional and has its own fees and terms. IndemniseVol is an information publisher and may earn a commission from labelled partner links; it does not decide or guarantee claims.
