Delayed or cancelled. Your rights, clearly explained.

A delay, a cancellation, an unanswered claim. We explain what you can ask for, which rules apply and where to go next.

Three amounts. Conditions that matter.

EU 261 may provide €250, €400 or €600 per passenger. Eligibility depends on the itinerary, delay on arrival, cancellation notice, re-routing and the cause of the disruption. A qualifying re-routing can reduce the amount.

€250

Flights up to 1,500 km

€400

Intra-EU flights over 1,500 km; other flights of 1,500–3,500 km

€600

Other flights over 3,500 km

Read Article 7 of the regulation

Paris–Casablanca is not Casablanca–Paris.

For a carrier based outside the EU, direction matters. These examples explain geographical coverage, not an automatic right to payment.

Paris → Casablanca

Departure from the EU

EU 261 covers this departure whether the operating airline is EU or non-EU.

Casablanca → Paris

Arrival from outside the EU

EU 261 generally requires an EU operating airline. A non-EU carrier is not covered on this leg under these rules.

A file you can find when you need it.

Before writing, bring the journey and the disruption into one record. Keep the originals; send copies.

Prepare your file

Completing this checklist organises your file; it does not confirm entitlement to compensation.

Build your file, step by step.

  1. 01

    The airline first

Write to the operating airline. Include the booking, flight details, actual arrival time, requested remedy and receipts. Keep its reply.

  2. 02

    Mediation where applicable

If your claim is refused or unanswered, check the mediator’s eligibility rules. Prior mediation is generally required before French court proceedings for these disputes, subject to exceptions.

  3. 03

    Enforcement and your individual claim

A report to the DGAC supports enforcement. It does not itself recover your compensation; mediation and the competent court have different roles.

Questions worth asking

Is every delayed flight eligible for €600?

No. €600 is the highest standard band. Shorter flights and intra-EU flights have lower bands, and eligibility depends on the circumstances. Arrival delays below three hours do not usually trigger fixed delay compensation.

Do I have to use a claims company?

No. You can contact the airline yourself. AirHelp is an optional commercial service with its own fees. IndemniseVol may receive a commission from marked partner links.

Does the DGAC pay my compensation?

No. The DGAC supervises compliance and can investigate infringements. It does not replace the airline’s handling of your individual compensation claim or the role of mediation and courts.
